Come, be inspired!
As thoughts of a New Year pass to signs of spring in Cotignac we are reminded about how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful corner of the World surrounded by ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful.’
Our New Collections
JB has always loved colour in his choice of his paintings for Galerie Bis and 2024 is looking like no exception. We have been lucky to acquire two wonderful collections of Mid-20th Century paintings by the Danish artist Poul Moller and the English artist Derek Carruthers.
Moller painted landscapes and seascapes, he loved playing with colour and tone to create mood.
Danish artist Poul Møller’s worked with simple, figurative compositions whose colour surfaces structure the motifs. Landscape paintings, layouts and figure pictures are often tightly composed. He was much influenced by his fellow Danish artists and contemporaries Immanuel Ibsen, Edvard Weie and Søren Hjort-Nielsen. Much of their work developed from Expressionism in the early years and lead to the renewal of Danish landscape painting in the mid 20th Century.
Carruthers created paintings and sculpture full of fun and joy often peopled by his characteristic ‘Lay’ figures.
Influenced by Schwitters and British Constructivists, Derek Carruthers embarked on a lifelong exploration of art's nature, probing abstraction and spatial relationships. Transitioning from 3D to traditional mediums in the 1980s, Carruthers continued to question human existence through his art, delving into themes of individual experience, human creation, and the relationship between humankind, religion, and art.
In addition JB is very pleased to now be working with Bernadette Van Baarsen, a wonderful Dutch artist we have admired for some time and whose colourful and joyful works capture the charm of our beloved countryside of Provence.
Bernadette ‘Berna’ Van Baarsen, originally from Amsterdam, pursued diverse paths including nursing, architecture, music, and sculpture before obtaining a PhD in psychology and medical ethics. Settling in France in 2015, she transitioned to painting, finding inspiration in the Provençal landscape, and has since exhibited her work in successful exhibitions in the region.
